Guillermo del Toro brought his Mexican pride to the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. The Oscar-winning director even performed with a mariachi band and made tortillas.

On Monday night (January 26), Netflix hosted an intimate event where the crowd was treated to a screening of 1992’s Cronos, which was del Toro’s feature film directorial debut. The Mexican director then turned the Sundance screening into a party with an impromptu performance with a live mariachi band. Del Toro belted his heart out to seven songs, including “México Querido y Lindo” and the Ritchie Valens classic “La Bamba.”

At the Sundance event, del Toro leaned further into his Mexican heritage in the kitchen. He was spotted helping make tortillas. Del Toro gleefully used the tortilla press to get a few tacos made for the crowd. The guests at the screening included The Daniels, Jonathan Wang, Janet Yang, Jamie Patricof, Geeta Gandbhir, and Elijah Wood.

Last week, del Toro received two Oscar nominations for his work on his 2025 adaptation of Frankenstein. He is nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. The movie received a further seven nominations, including for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, and Best Sound. Jacob Elordi also received his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The 98th Academy Awards will air live on ABC on March 15.
