After going viral earlier this year, Macario Martínez is expanding into soundtracks. On April 13, the rising Mexican singer released “Si Te Mentí,” a song inspired by The Last of Us.
“It’s a song that speaks from Joel’s broken heart, from that moment in which, for love, one also lies,” Martínez reportedly said about the new song.
The new song’s intro echoes Gustavo Santaolalla’s chords that distinguish the video game’s epic The Last of Us track, released back in 2013. With lyrics like, “Si te mentí, fue para hacerte feliz / En tus ojos veo los que alguna vez perdí / Si te mentí, fue para hacerme vivir [If I lied to you, it was to make you happy / In your eyes I see the ones I once lost / If I lied to you, it was to make me live],” the song seemingly draws the connection between the series’ characters Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey)’s relationship.
The video’s short version shows Martínez in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic room, performing the song with his acoustic guitar. It also shows scenes of the series’ Joel and Ellie as they navigate their relationship. It also features clips of the new season, where the duo is expected to explore the consequences of their choices. Without any spoilers, Martínez captures the duo’s turbulent sentiments through his emotional croons and simplistic guitar chords.

Social media users are praising the new track and the emerging star’s newfound fame. A YouTube user, EddiHarvor, wrote in Spanish: “Macario is living proof that opportunities don’t come by themselves, you have to have talent and background. Incredible track.”
The premiere of The Last of Us’ season 2 is streaming on Max now.
