Will Britney Spears Channel Her Inner Crazy for Guest Role on ‘Jane the Virgin’?

Turns out Britney Spears loves Jane the Virgin. We’re not talking about “I’ve seen a couple of episodes and it’s really fun”-type of love, we’re talking about “one of my favorite shows EVER”-type of love. Yes, that is an actual quote from the aging teen diva’s Twitter, and while this is certainly an interesting piece of trivia, we admit it’s not exactly newsworthy. That’s because the real news is that Spears will have the honor of guest starring on the CW’s critical darling in an upcoming episode of the second season.

So is that a good thing or a bad thing? Well, we can’t deny the fact that the ex-Mouseketeer has fallen pretty far from grace since blowing up the charts with 1998’s “Hit Me Baby One More Time,”  but it turns out that the Louisiana native actually has a pretty good track record when it comes to network sitcoms. Fans of the recently wrapped How I Met Your Mother may even recall Ms. Spears’ recurring role as Abby in season four, and it’s a little known fact that her presence is partially responsible for getting the show renewed for five more seasons.

Since its premiere in 2014, Jane the Virgin has been a critical success but lagged in the ratings department. Even after Gina Rodriguez’s Golden Globe win gave the show a big boost, viewership dropped off. Maybe what the show needs is an erratic tabloid darling to up its ratings, or maybe Spears’ presence is just a testament to Jane’s impressive crossover appeal. As of now, there aren’t many details on the specifics of her role, but we do know that she will be playing the nemesis of Jaime Camil’s Rodrigo de la Vega. Keep a look out for episode 205 to see the Princess of Pop in action.
