This Mexican Bar Was Just Named Best in the World

The list of the World’s 50 Best Bars 2024 was revealed this week. A total of 11 bars from Latin America made the cut from 28 destinations across the globe, including a bar in Mexico City taking top honors.
At No. 1 was Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico’s capital city. The bar, located in the Colonia Juárez neighborhood, first made the list in 2021 and also became the Best Bar in North America 2024 earlier this year. Handshake Speakeasy is described as a two-story “prohibition era-inspired drinkery … beloved across the world for its unfaltering hospitality and an unmissable cocktail offering that toys with flavors and textures.”
Coming in at No. 7 on the list is Tres Monos in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Earlier this year, Tres Monos was named The Best Bar in South America 2024. It is described as having “the aesthetic of an intimidating punk-spiked party” and being “the joyous home of delicious Argentinian liquids and all-night monkey business.”
At No. 8 is Alquímico in Cartagena, Colombia. Housed in a three-story 19th-century mansion in Cartagena’s Old Town, the bar’s drinks are “made with ingredients from its own farm flow.”
Making the list for the first time ever at No. 16 is Lady Bee in Lima, Peru. “We cannot be more grateful to the community that surrounds us, to the bounty of our territory, to the people who nurture and reinforce the purpose of this profession, to those who visit us daily and motivate us to keep moving forward,” said the owners of the bar on social media.
The other bars in Latin America that made the list are Tlecān in Mexico City (No.20); CoChinChina in Buenos Aires (No.22); Tan Tan in São Paulo, Brazil (No.31); Licorería Limantour in Mexico City (No.32); La Sala de Laura in Bogotá, Colombia (No.44); Florería Atlántico in Buenos Aires (No.46); and El Gallo Altanero in Guadalajara, Mexico (No.48).
