It looks like celebrity chef Rachael Ray is making a mess in the kitchen again. Everyone remembers when she tried to make pozole and Mexican rice, right?
This time, Ray shared a video making refried beans, and Latines are not very happy with the result.
Ray gets the cooking started by chopping up an onion and tossing it into a pan with what many critics online said was entirely too little olive oil. She then cut up a jalapeño and added it into the pan, along with some garlic and cumin.
Some viewers then flipped out when Ray added hot sauce to the mix. “No, not hot sauce,” said TikTok user Mr. Cilantro, who shared a play-by-play he recorded for Ray’s refried adventure. “Why you gonna put hot sauce?”
Ray also added salt and then drowned the mixture with a “splash” of water to help it “cook much quicker.” Mr. Cilantro was very unhappy with the addition of the water. “OK, now you’re messing everything up,” he said.
After boiling for a bit, Ray then added a can of beans, which Mr. Cilantro didn’t seem to mind since “sometimes you gotta use can beans.” What follows, however, is apparently unforgivable. Ray proceeded to pour all the beans into a food processor to mash them. “No, you don’t have to dirty an appliance,” he said. “Just squish it with a cup!”
Ray ended the video by putting all the beans back into the pan with the heat turned up way too high and burned them, although she says that she wanted the refried beans “crispy at the edges.” Maybe in Ray’s kitchen “crispy” means crunchy.
Sorry, not sorry, but Latines aren’t buying it, Rachael Ray.
