All eyes were on the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on September 12, 2023, which brings together and awards leading and up-and-coming artists in the music industry. This year’s annual awards ceremony and ‘pink’ carpet was on-brand when it came to bringing out artists and celebrities’ most daring, experimental, and winning looks. 

Latines won big across several categories at the VMAs, located this year at New Jersey’s Prudential Center. From Anitta’s big win in the MTV Video Music Award for Best Latin Video to Shakira receiving the Video Vanguard Award – Latine talent stayed winning, on stage and on the pink carpet when it comes to dressing to impress.

Ice Spice

The people’s princess stepped out in a sheer, lace-up bodycon dress with matching gloves and a true statement necklace: an 80-carat diamond ‘Munchkin’ chain. The “Bikini Bottom” artist also won her first Moon Person in the “Best New Artist” category.

The Warning

The Mexican Rock trio from Monterrey, made a hardcore statement on stage and on the pink carpet. The bandmates coordinated in black latex garments that were inspired by Rock and Roll. “It’s our genre, it’s what we love,” said Bass player Alejandra Villareal in an interview.

Karol G

Colombian artist, Karol G, stunned in a sheer, blush-pink gown and matching floor-length coat that included glistening embellishments throughout the fabric. At the award ceremony, Karol G celebrated a big win alongside Shakira, winning the “Best Collaboration” category for their single, “TQG.”

Shakira and Her Children

Shakira glowed in a slinky gold cutout dress by Versace, and shined all the brighter alongside her two boys, who like mother, were decked out in Versace via matching tracksuits. In addition to winning the category of  “Best Collaboration” with Karol G, Shakira also made history as the first South American woman to win the coveted Video Vanguard Award

Tefi Pessoa

Tefi Pessoa rocked and reimagined the OG LBD (original little black dress) look by donning a black, low back and low side gown with a bold statement necklace. Tefi accentuated her look with gold accessories including voluminous drop earrings and rings that made this classic dress versatile and timeless.

Peso Pluma

It’s all in the details for la Doble P. Peso Pluma arrived in a white suit with matching boots, a YSL tank, and black sunnies to top off his look. The newcomer who was nominated across 3 categories also made history by being the first regional Mexican musical act to perform at the annual awards show.

Anitta

Anitta has found the key to our hearts in her latest Schiaparelli look. She stunned in a sheer dress that featured a key-hole opening in the front against a high-crop bustier. Her look was complete with a black headband that featured a skeleton key lock in the center and a pop of color with scalloped red and yellow earrings.

Danna Paola

A mini dress and mega platforms are always a good idea. Mexican pop star, Danna Paola captivated us in her vampy-goth look that featured a leather cutout dress layered with a fuzzy and furry moto jacket and platform heels with flames. The look is topped off with a sleek, pulled-back hairstyle and a single swirl that means business.

Cardi B

Cardi B was turning heads all night in a custom metal look designed by Turkish-British designer, Dilara Findikoglu. The dress was constructed out of hundreds of metal hair clips that swirled in a pattern across the floor-length gown and matching cuffs. Cardi B also flaunted her metallic nails, which were also part of the look, as they were in perfect coordination with the “sharp” fit.

Selena Gomez

The Only Murders in the Building star killed it in a red floral Oscar de la Renta gown. The dress featured vine-like flowers flowing down into an asymmetrical skirt and providing an open leg slit. Selena was nominated in four categories, including Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Best Afrobeats song for her chart-topping hit “Calm Down.”
