The biggest stars of reggaeton are opening up about the explosion of the genre in a new docu-series. In an exclusive clip for Remezcla, Karol G, Rauw Alejandro, Natti Natasha, and other stars in el movimiento talk about their parents’ first reactions to reggaeton in Peacock’s Reggaeton: The Sound that Conquered the World

Omar Acosta, the executive producer and director of the four-part docu-series, teamed up with Daddy Yankee to revisit the genre’s history. Reggaeton: The Sound that Conquered the World will also include interviews and insights from fellow pioneers like Ivy Queen and Vico C. Today’s big superstars like Bad Bunny, Rauw Alejandro, Karol G, J Balvin, Feid, and Natti Natasha will also speak about their experiences.

In an exclusive clip from the docu-series, Karol G, Rauw Alejandro, and more open up about their parents’ initial thoughts on reggaeton music. “One day, I came home with my Walkman, and I’m singing along to some not-so-decent lyrics,” Rauw recounts. He then adds that his mom smacked him and said, “I don’t ever want you singing those kinds of things in this house.”

Karol G also opened up about her experience with her parents’ thoughts on reggaeton when she was starting out. “The first time that my father heard those songs, he was very upset,” she shares. “He said like, ‘Here, you cannot listen to this music!’” A decade into her career, Karol G’s dad has become his biggest supporter, accompanying her in wins like Album of the Year at the Latin Grammys or her very first gringo Grammy.

Reggaeton: The Sound that Conquered the World will start streaming on Peacock on Thursday, Oct. 3. Shaggy is another artist who will speak on his experience with reggaeton. As a Jamaican icon, he will probably talk about reggaeton’s roots in dancehall music.
