Grammy-winning singer Kali Uchis has made a trip to Mesoamerica. The singer and songwriter released a new track, “If It’s to Be,” and a lyric video for the upcoming Netflix animated film Maya and the Three.
“If It’s to Be” was written by two-time Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel) and Oscar-winning songwriter Paul Williams (A Star Is Born). Both English and Spanish versions of the song were released Friday, October 15.
“Every warrior princess needs a proper battle song and the Goddess of Music herself [Kali Uchis] came through for Maya and the crew,” reads the official Instagram for the series. “Listen to this original bop by [Paul Williams] and [Gustavo Santaolalla] on repeat now!”
The film, directed by Jorge R. Gutiérrez (Book of Life), follows a warrior princess who goes on a quest to fulfill an ancient prophecy and stop a group of dark lords from destroying the world. The majority Latine cast includes Zoe Saldaña, Stephanie Beatriz, Gabriel Iglesias, and Diego Luna.
In the lyric video, Uchis sings about a young girl’s destiny and how she uses courage, faith, and hope to complete her life’s mission. “If I cannot walk, the last mile I will fly/My wings a gift of angels, home is in the sky.”
Earlier this year, Uchis won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for her single “10%” featuring record producer and DJ Kaytranada. In 2020, Uchis released her second studio album, Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios), which peaked at No. 3 on Billboard’s U.S. Top Latin Albums.
Maya and the Three premieres on Netflix on October 22, 2021.
