Polo González is leading a new wave of corridos stars. The rising Mexican singer’s big break first came three years ago, but due to different factors, he decided to step away from the music scene. But now González is back and better than ever with his underdog anthem “Vago,” premiering exclusively on Remezcla today (April 10). González also opened up about making his comeback and where his career is going next.

“From the beginning, my music sounded different from the rest because the type of melodies and lyrics I wrote were more inspiring by rapping than singing, but with guitars and the bajoloche,” he tells Remezcla. “I have a voice that’s truly different from the rest, and later, we included a flute in my songs, which made me stand even more because no one else uses that.”

González has a unique perspective in corridos due to his bicultural upbringing. He was born Adrián González Fernandez in Jalisco, Mexico, and later was raised in Denver, CO. González inspirations include corridos tumbados pioneers Natanael Cano and Junior H and the genre’s global star Peso Pluma. “They inspire me because of how far they’ve come despite the difficulties that this career puts onto your path,” he adds.

In terms of success, González later found himself on the same level as Cano and Junior H with 2021’s Un Album Sencillo. His debut LP included breakthrough hits “Sencillo Soy” and “Tan Solo Morro.” After amassing over 12 million streams on Spotify, González left his job as a construction worker to dedicate himself to his passion for music full-time.

However, with the overnight fame came struggles that led him to put his career on pause. “There was a lack of support from the label that I was with before,” González admits. “Also, there were family issues going on that made me depressed. Most importantly, I had a desire to improve as an artist before giving music to my fans again.”

In 2024, González signed with Ligas Mayores Records, and he returned with a vengeance with songs like the fiery “Amiri.” Now, he is solidifying his comeback with the empowering “Vago.” In the music video, González retells his personal story about starting from the bottom to becoming a resilient and jet-setting corridos boss.

“‘Vago’ was possibly inspired by the same reasons why I stopped making music for a while,” he says. “Aside from the adrenaline rush you get when you listen to it, I’d like people who listen to it to realize that the problems we have should be our fuel.”

González plans to forge ahead with new music this year and hopes to perform a few concerts in the U.S. Like with the message behind “Vago,” he also wants to be an example. “I would like to inspire more young people to make music so they can invest their time in something beautiful and stay away from bad things,” González says.
