New York rapper Princess Nokia may have just reissued her beloved 2013 album Metallic Butterfly, but you can bet that she has been quietly toiling away at brand new material for months now. The rapper better known as Destiny Frasqueri rang in the new year by sharing some of the new material she’s been working on via Instagram. The latest snippet is from a song called “Balenciaga,” which finds Nokia dropping bars about self-love and designer clothes.
Nokia spent the latter half of 2018 touring and working on a variety of social justice initiatives, including the Hurricane María relief campaign Hood 2 La Gente, which she launched in August. Though all of these projects have kept her busy, the rapper is still working on new music. Back in November, Nokia tweeted that she’d be withdrawing from social media to focus on her creative efforts. “Taking time [to] work on myself in preparation of my next album is my biggest focus right now,” she wrote. “Going inward with spiritual isolation and creative mastery to ensure I’m living up [to] my most artistic potential. Withdrawing from social media is vital in this creative and spiritual space.”
