Update, June 28, 9:52 a.m. ET: As we get closer to Selena for Sanctuary, we’re learning more about who else is part of the lineup. Recently, it was announced that Kali Uchis will headline the event.

“[I’m] so honored to be headlining Selena for Sanctuary this year,” she said in a statement to Remezcla. “Creating safe spaces and bringing awareness to the issues immigrant communities are facing is the goal. I can’t wait celebrate our roots, our journeys, all while paying tribute to the inspirational icon Selena.”

Read on to learn more about what to expect at this year’s event.

Selena for Sanctuary will return for its second year to New York City, and the concert series organized by Mija Management founder Doris Muñoz will continue to benefit immigrant rights. Last summer, Omar Apollo, Cuco, Riobamba, Mon Laferte, and Selena’s widower and special guest guitarist Chris Perez all performed at the event, covering Selena’s beloved collection of songs for thousands at Lincoln Center.

This year, the event will be a part of Central Park’s celebrated Summerstage concert series. The lineup includes Chicano wunderkind Cuco, indie singer Ambar Lucid, R&B soul artist Jasper Bones, and DJ Svani Quintanilla. Just like last year, artists will cover the late Tejano icon’s cumbia classics and ballads. More headliners and special guests are slated to be announced in early May. This year’s Selena for Sanctuary will take place on August 18, 2019 in Central Park.

This year’s event will support Make The Road New York, a grassroots organization that provides legal assistance and community organizing for immigrants and working-class families. Last year, Muñoz’s series – Selena for Sanctuary and her other event called Solidarity for Sanctuary in Los Angeles – raised thousands of dollars to fund legal defense for immigrants.

“We’re about raising funds, but more raising awareness and creating safe spaces for people,” Muñoz told Remezcla last year at Lincoln Center. “The takeaway is the energy that people experience when they enter these events and these spaces; they just share it with their best friends, with their tías, with their primos, with their neighbors — the buzz is awesome within our community.”

Stay tuned for more info as exciting special guests are slated to be announced soon.

Selena for Sanctuary takes place on Sunday, August 18 at 8 pm – 10 pm. For more information on the lineup, head over to Summerstage’s website.
