Shakira is opening up about her diss track “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” against her ex Gerard Piqué for the first time. In an interview last night (Feb. 27), the Colombian superstar talked about the viral song and how it was therapeutic for her following their split.

In Jan. Shakira released her collaboration “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Argentine producer Bizarrap. In the song, she roasted Piqué and his current girlfriend Clara Chía Martí. The lyrics where Shakira seemingly compared Piqué’s alleged cheating to downgrading from a Rolex watch to a Casio went viral. The song reached No. 9 on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart.

In her first TV interview since breaking up Piqué, Shakira told journalist Enrique Acevedo that the idea for “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” actually came from her 10-year-old son Milan. He was the one who introduced her to Bizarrap’s music. “He told me, ‘Mommy, you have to do something with Bizarrap, who is an Argentine god,’” she said with a laugh. Shakira added that she always listens to her children’s advice. Sasha had the idea for the robot in the “Te Felicito” music video and he also designed the cover art for the “Monotonía” single.

In speaking about what “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” meant to her, Shakira saw the song as a way to channel her emotions after her split. “My lyrics are more effective than a visit to the psychologist,” she said. Shakira added that she enjoyed working with Bizarrap on the song. “Someone should have taken a picture of how I started and how I finished the session with Bizarrap,” she said. “It was an outlet for my healing process.”

Shakira also quoted former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright when she said, “In hell there is a place for women who don’t support other women.” Many media outlets are falsely attributing the quote to an attack on Martí when Shakira was talking about herself. She implied that “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” was her way of supporting women who are going through what she’s gone through with Piqué.

After admitting that she depended a lot on her past partners, Shakira’s priority is to be strong for her children and herself as she moves forward with her life. “I depend on myself,” she said. “I have two children and I have to be a lioness for them.”
