Shakira is diving into a new era in her music career. The singer channeled The Little Mermaid in her “Copa Vacía” music video with fellow Colombian artist Manuel Turizo, released today (June 29).

Following her breakup with Gerard Piqué last year, Shakira appeared to heal through her music. From the heartbreaking “Monotonía” to the empowering “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap, she reflected on moving on from that past relationship. Shakira then focused on her affection for her children in the heartfelt “Acróstico.” Now, she is singing about love again in “Copa Vacía” with her compatriot Manuel Turizo.

Shakira wrote “Copa Vacía” with Manuel Turizo, his brother Julian, Puerto Rican singer Gale, Dani Blau, and ChocQuibTown member Slow Mike. She also co-produced the song with Slow Mike and DallasK. Shakira blends her Latin pop sound with reggaeton beats. She sings about wanting more from a lover focused on other things. “Let go of your phone and use your hands with me,” she sings in Spanish. Turizo turns up the sultriness of the song with his rich baritone voice. Shakira comes through with a sexy love song that’s perfect for the summer season.

Shakira transforms into a mermaid in the music video for “Copa Vacía.” Manuel Turizo proves to be Prince Eric to her Ariel. He rescues her from a trashed part of the ocean. The dilemma between the two lovebirds is how a human man can be intimate with a woman of the sea. The glass wall of Shakira’s tank separates her from the Colombian heartthrob. Shakira co-directed the cinematic video with her frequent collaborator Jaume de la Iguana.

It’s been six years since Shakira released her last album, El Dorado, so her fans are thirsty for more music. According to reports, she will release her highly-anticipated twelfth studio album in September.
