Does Shakira have a new love in her life? The Colombian artist has lyrics of a budding romance, which she previewed yesterday (March 4) of the song “Nassau” off her upcoming album.

While songs from artists don’t necessarily have to be personal, Shakira’s suggestive answer in a recent interview may hint at the possibility. When opening up about the story behind “Nassau” to Spotify, she decided to keep the meaning behind the lyrics to herself. “The lyrics make it personal,” Shakira said in Spanish. “I can’t share it because I won’t reveal it, but there’s the song, so you can listen to it,” she adds with a smile.

“Nassau” is a tropical pop song with elements of Afrobeat in the mix. In the few seconds of the preview, Shakira appears to serenade a new lover in her life. In Spanish, she sings, “I who had promised that I would never love again / You appeared to heal the wounds left by that.” Shakira coyly adds at the end, “I like you a lot.” She co-produced the song with hit-maker Tainy, Albert Hype, and duo The Roommates.

This release reportedly marks Shakira dabbling in Afrobeat influences for the first time in her career.

Could the theme of love in Shakira’s recent songs signal a shift in her musical energy following her public split? Shakira channeled the heartache of her split from Gerard Piqué into global hits like “Monotonía” featuring Ozuna, “TQG” with Karol G, and the explosive “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap.

While the mystery behind who Shakira could be singing to on “Nassau” remains, perhaps she will talk more about the song when it’s officially released soon. The Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran album will drop on March 22. Over the weekend, Shakira released a preview of the song “(Entre Paréntesis)” during Grupo Frontera’s set at the Besame Mucho music festival. The LP will also include “Puntería,” her highly anticipated collaboration with Cardi B.
