Demi Lovato appears to be taking shots at ex Wilmer Valderrama in her new song. Yesterday (Aug. 4), a leaked snippet of the track “29” appeared on TikTok and made fans think the lyrics talked about her past relationship with actor Wilmer Valderrama.

“29” is one of the songs from Lovato’s upcoming album Holy Fvck. When a snippet of the song started to circulate online, it instantly went viral for its lyrics, which got people speculating that they were inspired by Valderrama. Lovato first met the That’s ‘70s Show star when she was 17 and he was 29. They started dating when Lovato turned 18, and lasted six years. The couple went public with their relationship in 2014 on Lovato’s “I Really Don’t Care” music video.

In “29,” Lovato appears to reference Valderrama’s age when she first met him. In the lyrics, she sings, “ “Finally 29 / Funny, just like you were you at the time. Thought it was a teenage dream / just a fantasy / But was it yours or was it mine?” She then appears to allude to the age gap between the two. “Far from innocent / what the fuck’s consent? / Numbers told you not to / but that didn’t stop you.”

While Lovato hasn’t confirmed if the lyrics in “29” are about Valderrama, fans think so, and it’s opening up a conversation about the couple’s age gap during their relationship. One fan on Twitter wrote, “Demi Lovato calls out former boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama for dating her when she was 17 and he was 29.” Another fan wrote, “Just realizing I’m now the age Wilmer Valderrama was when he preyed on 17-year-old Demi Lovato. Crazy times.”

It’s important to note that Lovato recently announced that she now goes by she/her pronouns after using they/them for the last year. Lovato’s Holy Fvck album will come out on Aug. 19. She previewed the LP with the singles “Skin of My Teeth” and “Substance.”
