Latin American pop classics from the ‘80s are having a resurgence thanks to the success of Mentiras, La Serie. Belinda and her castmates covered beloved songs by Amanda Miguel, Daniela Romo, Yuri, Rubby Pérez, and more for the hit Prime Video musical.

Mentiras, La Series is a television adaptation of the Mexican musical of the same name. The series stars Belinda as Daniela Levy de Mijares, Diana Bovio as Dulce D’Alessio, Regina Blandón as Yuri Bosé, and Mariana Treviño as Lupita Romo. The cast is rounded out by Luis Gerardo Méndez as Emmanuel Mijares. Their characters’ names are taken from ‘80s icons like Dulce, Emmanuel, Mijares, Daniela Romo, Yuri, Lupita D’Alessio, and Miguel Bosé. The series unfolds at Emmanuel Mijares’ funeral, after the four women discover across the eight episodes that he was romantically involved with them all at the same time.

The soundtrack for Mentiras, La Series boasts 24 songs, mash-ups, and medleys. The most popular cover at the moment is Belinda and Diana Bovio’s mash-up of Amanda Miguel’s “Él Me Mintió” and Daniela Romo’s “Mentiras.” Another one of Miguel’s songs that has become popular again is “Castillos,” which was covered by Belinda, Blandón, Bovio, and Treviño. A pivotal point in the series takes place when Belinda and Blandón argue while singing a mash-up of Miriam Ochoa’s “Amiga Mía” and Rocío Banquells’ “Ese Hombre No Se Toca.”

Many of Yuri’s past hits are covered in Mentiras, La Series, including “Cuando Baja La Marea” and “Es Ella Más Que Yo.” In addition to “Mentiras,” more of Romo’s classics were revisited, like “Pobre Secretaria,” “De Mí Enamórate,” and “Me Alimento de Ti.” “De Color De Rosa” by Rubby Pérez, who died in the Jet Set nightclub tragedy earlier this year, was also covered. Another popular cover is Blandón and Méndez’s version of Pandora’s “Cómo Te Va Mi Amor.” The ‘80s are back in full force thanks to the nostalgic Mentiras soundtrack.
