Merely three days in, Xavi is already shaping up to be the breakthrough música mexicana artist of 2024. Yesterday (Jan. 2), the rising Mexican-American singer earned the first No. 1 hit of the year on Spotify.

Xavi was born Joshua Xavier Gutiérrez in Phoenix, AZ. After signing with Interscope Records, Xavi got into a bad car accident that nearly ended his career before it even started. Despite doctors telling him he wouldn’t be able to sing again, a video of him singing and playing guitar from his hospital bed went viral. Shortly after, Xavi recovered and returned to making music.

In August 2023, Xavi released his debut single with Interscope, “La Víctima.” The breakup song went viral on TikTok and became his first song to crack the top 10 of Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart at No. 5. The success of “La Víctima” also pushed Xavi to No. 1 on the Latin Songwriters Chart at 19-years-old.

At the end of November, the Mexican-American singer released his follow-up single, the fiery “La Diabla,” which has now become his biggest hit to date. Yesterday, the song went to No. 1 on Spotify’s Top 50 global chart. Xavi made history as the first Mexican artist to reach the top of a chart with a solo song. “La Diabla” marks the fourth time that a música mexicana song has gone No. 1 on Spotify, following Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma’s “Ella Baila Sola,” Grupo Frontera’s “Un 100xto” with Bad Bunny, and Peso Pluma’s music session with Bizarrap.

On this week’s Hot Latin Songs chart, Xavi is also at No. 1 with “La Diabla.” He pushed last week’s top song, Bad Bunny’s “Monaco,” to the No. 2 spot. Both “La Diabla” and “La Víctima” also appear on Billboard’s all-genre Hot 100 chart. Xavi is achieving big success without features or collaborations and he’s just getting started.
