A rising Venezuelan artist is making waves with his appearance on the Emilia Pérez soundtrack. Yadam is featured in a poignant song in the musical, which stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez. He spoke with Remezcla about the connection to the film.

Yadam is an independent artist hailing from Maracay, Venezuela. He emigrated with his family to the U.S. as a child and later relocated to Paris, France, to start his music career. As an openly gay artist, Yadam has also become an empowering voice for the LGBTQ+ community with his debut album Belamor. He sings about the complexities of queer relationships in songs like “Otras Mujeres” and “Beso.” Now, Yadam’s voice can be heard in the choir version of the song “Desire” in the film.

“It’s an honor for me to be featured on the soundtrack alongside the actresses who also sing in the movie,” Yadam tells Remezcla. “To be a part of the cinematic revolution of this movie, which mixes France with Mexico, Latin America, and queerness; it’s an honor. It’s like a mix of everything from my background. This movie brings all of that together.”

Emilia Pérez was helmed by French director Jacques Audiard. The musical set in Mexico City follows Saldaña and Gomez’s characters as they help Gascón’s Emilia Pérez achieve her dreams of transitioning into a woman. The songs in the movie were written by French composers Clément Ducol and Camille, who is known for singing “Le Festin” on the Ratatouille soundtrack. Calling that his favorite Disney movie, working with Camille was a full-circle moment for Yadam.

“To be in the same studio with Camille because she liked my voice was crazy,” he says. “To be a part of something that’s creating a lot of conversation around and giving visibility to the very important topic of transness in Latin America, it’s incredible. I feel proud to be a part of something that will be historic for Karla Sofía Gascón, for Selena Gomez, and for this multicultural mix in cinema.”

Emilia Pérez is now playing in theaters. Yadam revealed he is currently putting the finishing touches on his next album, which will mix Latine pop music with soul. On Dec. 19, Yadam will also perform at fellow Venezuelan singer La Cruz’s concert in Madrid.
