Kany García is dabbling in música mexicana for the first time. The Puerto Rican singer teamed up with Mexican star Christian Nodal for her “La Siguiente” music video, out today (Sept. 21).
“La Siguiente” is García’s first taste of new music since the release of her album El Amor Que Merecemos earlier this year. The LP featured hits the feel-good “DPM (De Pxta Madre)” and “Muero” featuring Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz. Now, García is working with Nodal for the first time.
In “La Siguiente,” García sings about moving from a past relationship and not giving her ex any second chances. Nodal acts as her partner, trying to come back into her life in a heartfelt performance. Spanish guitar and elements of ranchera music back the push and pull of the duo’s complicated relationship. García’s soulful voice finds a new home in música mexicana alongside Nodal.
“This song was born to be a duet, because it’s a conversation between the couple, and I was always sure that that voice was Christian Nodal, who has a magical voice with a unique feeling,” García said in a statement. “I wanted him to feel that the song was also his, that it had elements of his DNA and that he could also put his own stamp on it. Working with him has been a wonderful experience.”
In the “La Siguiente” music video, García and Nodal are singing to each other from separate places. García is surrounded by plants and light in her comforting room while Nodal’s room is up in flames. As Nodal tries to win over García when they’re together again, she’s not giving him the time of day. Her mindset is very much “thank you, next.”
This week, García received two Latin Grammy Award nominations. She’s up for Best Pop Vocal Album for El Amor Que Merecemos and Best Tropical Song for “Agüita e Coco.” Nodal received three nominations, including Best Regional Song for “Cuando Me Dé La Gana” with Christina Aguilera.
