While performing in Argentina, Shakira paid tribute to one of the country’s greatest artists. Last night (Dec. 8), the Colombian pop icon performed “Día Especial” in a virtual duet with the late Gustavo Cerati.

Gustavo Cerati was best known as the lead singer of the Argentine rock group Soda Stereo, though he also had an illustrious solo career. Before his passing in 2014, he also frequently collaborated with Shakira. Cerati co-produced a few songs on her 2005 album Fijación Oral, Vol. 1. His name is in the credits of “Día Especial” and he also featured on “No.” During his lifetime, Cerati performed “Día Especial” with Shakira at Live Earth in Germany in 2007. Following that live duet and the Oral Fixation Tour, Shakira stopped performing “Día Especial” at her concerts.

Last night, Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour returned to Argentina. She is putting on three concerts at the Jose Amalfitani Stadium in Buenos Aires. To kick off night one, she surprised the crowd with her first live performance of “Día Especial” in 18 years. On top of that, Shakira performed the song with an AI-generated video of Cerati. His vocals during the performance were presumably lifted from a previous performance together or the song’s demo. A giant image of Cerati’s face filled the stadium as Shakira sang along with him.

After the concert, Shakira shared a few words about her virtual duet with Cerati on Instagram. In Spanish, she wrote, “I had a friend that I will never forget, that whenever we were together he made me feel like it was un día especial and that’s why our friendship will last forever.”

Shakira has already extended her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour into next year. As of right now, the final show is set to take place at Mexico City’s Estadio GNP Seguros on Feb. 27, 2026.
