The life story and legacy of Rocío Dúrcal will be revisited in two special projects. This morning (Oct. 1), Sony announced that a documentary and scripted series about the late Spanish icon are in development.
Thanks to her timeless hits, Dúrcal remains one of the biggest and most influential female Iberoamerican artists. The Madrid native was launched into superstardom after relocating to Mexico in the ’70s. While there, she became close friends with Mexican singer-songwriter Juan Gabriel. Dúrcal embraced música mexicana with Juanga, turning his compositions like “Amor Eterno” and “Costumbres” into instant classics. After decades in the spotlight, she passed away in 2006 at age 61 from uterine cancer.
Now, Sony Music Vision México is teaming up with Buendía Estudios to revisit Dúrcal’s life and legacy. Considering that many projects have been made about Juan Gabriel since his passing in 2016, it’s nice that his friend and collaborator will soon have her story retold. At the Sony Music Vision Latin-Iberia panel, Sergi Reitg, the regional VP of the company, revealed that a documentary and scripted TV series about Dúrcal are in the works.
“At Sony Music Vision, we’re developing one of the most ambitious projects in our history, highlighting Rocío Dúrcal’s place as a generational icon for audiences in Mexico, U.S. Latin markets, and Spain,” Reitg said. “Her legacy is undeniable: with over 22 billion TikTok views, she remains part of the cultural conversation, embraced by younger generations who are using her music in their own content.”

Ignacio Corrales, the CEO of Buendía Estudios, added that both projects will have access to Dúrcal’s complete musical and audiovisual archive of work. Sony and Buendía Estudios will also work closely with her family to offer personal and previously unseen material from Dúrcal for the documentary and TV series. A biopic about the singer went into production last year.
