One of Juan Gabriel’s most iconic concerts is heading to the big screen in the U.S. Next month, fans of the late Mexican icon can catch “Juan Gabriel: Mi Primer Bellas Artes” in theaters.
A landmark moment in the history of Mexican music was Juanga’s string of concerts at Mexico City’s Bellas Artes. A recording of the concerts from May 1990 was packaged as Juan Gabriel en el Palacio de Bellas Artes, which became one of his best-selling albums. The performances were also captured in the concert film “Juan Gabriel: Mi Primer Bellas Artes.” A remastered and newly edited version of the film is coming soon to theaters in the U.S., Latin America, and Spain.
Mexican filmmaker María José Cuevas, who was at the helm of the Netflix docuseries “Juan Gabriel: Debo, Puedo y Quiero,” restored the Juanga concert film. According to Billboard, “Juan Gabriel: Mi Primer Bellas Artes” will include never-before-seen rehearsal footage that Cuevas discovered was left out of the film’s original edit. The footage was taken a day before the icon’s string of concerts at the Bellas Artes. To honor the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, “Juan Gabriel: Mi Primer Bellas Artes” will be released to theaters in the U.S. on Sept. 15. That will also mark the 10th anniversary of Juan Gabriel’s passing, who died on Aug. 28, 2016 at age 66.
“Juan Gabriel: Mi Primer Bellas Artes” was produced by Sony Music Vision and it will be distributed to theaters in the U.S. by Fathom Entertainment. Before going nationwide on Sept. 15, the National Museum of Mexican Art will host a premiere of the film at Chicago’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park on Aug. 28. That same day, the movie will open in theaters in Latin America and Spain. Juanga fans in the U.S. can now purchase tickets.
