Canelo Álvarez is apologizing to Lionel Messi and Argentina for the recent barrage of tweets that he’s been putting out since Mexico lost to Argentina in a game at the 2022 World Cup.

“These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina,” Álvarez tweeted. “Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn.”

Álvarez lashed out on social media this past Saturday (November 26) after Argentina defeated Mexico 2-0. Álvarez, however, wasn’t upset by the loss itself. Instead, he was angry at what he perceived to be disrespect shown by team captain Messi who inadvertently kicked away a Mexico jersey while taking off a cleat in a celebration video.

While some social media users viewed the kick as an accident, others like Álvarez saw it as an intentional move by Messi and a sign of disrespect. “Que le pida a Dios que no me lo encuentre!!” Álvarez initially tweeted before it was deleted for violating Twitter Policy.

This, of course, prompted a lot of people to respond to him. Plenty were just regular Twitter users. But some were legends like Sergio Agüero, who has been a close friend of Messi’s since they were teens, and who Álvarez hit back at.

Agüero responded in turn, explained that players swap jerseys and sometimes they end up on the floor, and even made a video condemning Álvarez and his words.

Even Mexican player Andrés Guardado, the captain of the Mexico National Team, told TyC sports that “Canelo doesn’t understand what happens in a locker room.”

Hopefully, now that Canelo Álvarez has apologized, we can all put this behind us and focus on supporting the talented players at the 2022 World Cup.
