The first official trailer for the upcoming Disney+ series National Treasure: Edge of History was unveiled during the D23 Expo on Saturday (September 10).

Taking the stage at the biannual event was lead actress Lisette Olivera who plays Jess Valenzuela, a 22-year-old Dreamer searching for answers about her family’s history.

“I was really able to learn more about my culture through the show and really appreciate it more because I was able to understand the perspective that she has through my own body, in a way,” Olivera recently told Entertainment Weekly.

Based on the National Treasure film series, the new show follows Jess and her friends as they set off “on [a] Pan American treasure adventure,” which includes some conflict with a black-market antique dealer named Billy Pearce (Catherine Zeta-Jones).

The trailer begins with Academy Award-nominated actor Harvey Keitel (Bugsy) reprising his role as FBI agent Peter Sadusky from the first two movies, 2004’s National Treasure and 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets. “This holds a clue to a treasure of utmost importance,” Peter tells Jess. “I thought about destroying it a million times in order to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.”

Later, Peter notices that Jess is wearing a necklace that looks familiar to him. “Where did you get that necklace?” he asks her. She tells him that it belonged to her father who died when she was only a baby. Turns out, the symbol on Jess’s necklace is the same symbol on a relic that could help her on her quest.

“Everything I thought I knew about my dad – my whole family for that matter – is a crazy riddle that can only be solved by finding this treasure.”

The first two episodes of National Treasure: Edge of History premiere on Disney+ December 14, 2022.
