Remezcla's favorite cumbia villeros Damas Gratis are finally making it up to the US from Argentina for shows in Miami and New York. There had been rumors of them coming in the summer, then in September, but those hopes were quickly squelched, and we had to satisfy our villera cravings with ZZK mixtapes and YouTube videos. But this time it's for real, and it's all going down November 8th at Kukaramakara with Bachaco opening up ...we have keytar-wielding, jheri curl-sporting DG frontman Pablo Lescano's word...

If anything is constant throughout our lives, it’s the changing nature of how we see ourselves. In order to progress or even survive, reinvention is needed but that does not mean progress, it is still only change. That same action can have unintended effects on the people closest to the person going through a change

This weekend is Labor Day weekend, which for New York always means the West Indian Day Parade and corresponding celebrations in Brooklyn. But this year, it also coincides with the Brazilian Day Festival, the celebration of Brazilian Independence Day (September 7th) and the largest Brazilian event outside of Brazil. To quote a friend, "there's gonna be a whole lotta skin, sequins & feathers around!"

As we all know, Brazilians know how to party, and this marks the 25th anniversary of the celebration in NYC, so expect an especially over-the-top festa this year. So instead of planning trips to the beach or out of town, head to midtown to Little Brazil (aka Times Square East) for 2 days (yes, Brazilian Day is actually Brazilian Weekend) of samba dancing, live music (Carlinhos Brown and rapper Marcelo D2, among others), the cleansing of 46th street, plenty of food, green, yellow, and blue everything, and much much more.

For a full taste of what to expect, visit the Brazilian Day Festival official site.

Escape to Paradise with Capo

Think of Pedro Capó as a Latino version of Jason Mraz: he’s got the looks, the sensibility, even the hat. But Capó also has pedigree, and don’t mind his tribal tattoos...he’s got taste, and writing skills. His grandfather was Bobby Capó, one of Puerto Rico’s most famous composers, who in the 1940’s and 1950’s wrote classics such as "Piel Canela," and "Luna de Miel en Puerto Rico."

After stints in the Celia Cruz Off-Broadway musical (he played Cabezita de Algodon’s nurse), and in the film Paraiso Travel with John Leguizamo, Capó, who is based in New York City, is now focused on his music. He’s playing several gigs around town (catch him live September 10 at The Delancey) and will be releasing his debut album in October through Sony.

Click here for the video for "Vamos a Huir", directed by Ruben Martin and shot in Puerto Rico. If the beautiful landscapes of the island of Culebra and Capó’s raspy voice don’t give Hawaii and Jason Mraz a kick in the butt, I don’t know what will...
