After openly endorsing Donald Trump’s campaign for President of the United States, Nicky Jam is now walking back his statement. Following a racist joke towards Puerto Rico at a Trump rally at Madison Square Garden, the singer of Dominican and Puerto Rican descent has decided to no longer support the Republican presidential nominee.

Back in September, Jam announced his endorsement of Trump at a campaign rally in Las Vegas, NV. The moment went viral online after Trump misgendered the “Hasta El Amanecer” hit-maker. Before Jam approached the podium, Trump shouted, “She’s hot!”

Jam’s endorsement of Trump saw swift backlash from Maná. In a post on Instagram, the Mexican group shared an image that said, “Maná does not work with racists.” Maná also revealed that they removed their collaboration with Jam, “De Pies a Cabeza,” from all music streaming services.

Now, at a Trump rally in Madison Square Garden over the weekend, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe told a racist joke where he called Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage.” Immediately afterward Bad Bunny showed support for Vice President Kamala Harris on social media, followed by other Puerto Ricans like Jennifer Lopez and Ricky Martin.

This afternoon (Oct. 30), Jam posted a video on Instagram where he talked about his endorsement of Trump. “The reason why I supported Donald Trump is because I thought it was best for the economy of the United States, where a lot of Latinos live, a lot of us live, I include myself, and many immigrants who are suffering because of the economy,” Jam said. “And him being a businessman, I thought it was the best move.”

Jam then revealed that he is taking back his support of Trump following Hinchcliffe’s racist comments. “Never in my life did I think that a month later a comedian was going to come to criticize my country and speak badly of my country and therefore, I renounce any support for Donald Trump, and I sidestep any political situation,” he said. “Puerto Rico deserves respect.”

Tomorrow (October 31) in Las Vegas, Maná will perform at a rally for Harris’. And Jennifer Lopez is scheduled to give a speech.
