Not only does FloyyMenor have one of the biggest songs of the year, but he’s also pushing his country’s music scene forward. The teen phenom has put Chile on the map when it come to el movimiento and beyond with his breakthrough hit “Gata Only.” On the heels of that success, FloyyMenor recently dropped his debut EP, El Comienzo. In an interview with Remezcla, he talks about the story behind his viral hit, Travis Scott being a fan, and what’s next.

“I like to represent my country,” FloyyMenor says. “More than a song, ‘Gata Only’ is a phenomenon. I’m impressed by how far the song is going.”

Before breaking out with “Gata Only,” he was born Alan Felipe Galleguillos in Vicuña, Chile. Unlike other reggaetoneros, Floyymenor cites global acts like Coldplay, Katy Perry, and Travis Scott as his inspirations. He started uploading his songs to YouTube two years ago. After joining forces with fellow Chilean Cris MJ on “Gata Only” back in February, FloyyMenor has become one of their country’s leading artists.

“Gata Only” reached No. 3 on Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart earlier this year. The song also spent multiple weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart. Following the success of his collaboration with Cris MJ, FloyyMenor released a remix featuring Ozuna and Anitta.

“It’s different in Chile because reggaeton has exploded there recently,” he says about the local music scene. “The Chilean movement is flourishing, and it will keep going strong. Part of the world didn’t know that Chile makes reggaeton music because you didn’t see many artists from there. ‘Gata Only’ exploded, and now they see the music we’re making.”

But despite the popularity the track eventually reached, the singer reveals he held onto the song for a bit before unleashing it to the world. “I wrote ‘Gata Only’ a year and a half ago,” he shares. “The thing is, I didn’t make that type of music before. I was making music like malianteo for the streets. I didn’t know what would be the right moment to release it because people weren’t used to hearing my commercial music.”

Earlier this month, U.S. rapper Travis Scott bumped “Gata Only” at a party he was hosting in Spain. When asked if he would like to collaborate with the rapper in the future, Floyymenor says, “Obviously, and that’s why we’re working hard to make those dreams come true.” He adds that he would also love to link up with Katy Perry and Drake in the future.

“I want to work with those big artists that have made their mark on music history,” he notes. “I’m trying to get on that level. I don’t want to just be another singer. I want to be a Chilean star.”

FloyyMenor’s El Comienzo EP includes his rising hit “Apaga El Cel” and the alluring “Tu Ta Rica,” featuring Chilean producer Lewis Somes. He is already hard at work on his debut album, which he promises will be coming soon. FloyyMenor also has a tour, concerts, and more collaborations on the way.

“Like the title of my EP says, it’s just the beginning,” he shares. “I’m just getting started. The EP is a warm-up for my music to come.”
