Marcello Hernández is now playing the highest-ranking Latino official in the country on Saturday Night Live. In the most recent episode (March 8), the comedian debuted his impression of U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
With SNL doing a lot more political sketches about President Donald Trump’s second administration, there was hope Hernández, who is of Cuban and Dominican descent, would soon play a parody of Rubio. Like Hernández, Rubio is Cuban-American and they both hail from Miami, Florida. On January 21, Rubio made history as the first Latino to be sworn in as the U.S. Secretary of State as a part of Trump’s Cabinet.
According to reports, Rubio and Elon Musk clashed last Thursday (March 6) during a meeting in front of Trump. SNL seized upon the alleged incident for the cold open.
The skit took place in the Oval Office with Trump, who was played by James Austin Johnson, meeting with Hernández’s Rubio. He played the U.S. Secretary of State as a submissive yes-man to Trump. After Johnson referred to him as “my good little Marco,” Hernández said, “Mr. Trump, if you think I’m gonna stand here and let you call me that, you’re right.” In response to Trump recently signing an executive order to make English the official language of the U.S., Johnson added that he would change Rubio’s name to “Mark Ruby.”

Then Mike Myers joined the skit as billionaire White House advisor Musk. While having a childish argument with Hernández in the Oval Office, Myers referenced the “100 billion dollars” line from his Dr. Evil character in the 1997 movie Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
Marcello Hernández is the first Latino to impersonate Rubio on SNL. In the past, the politician was played by Taran Killam and Pete Davidson. Rubio now joins the other characters in his repertoire, including Don Francisco from Sábado Gigante and Domingo.
