The nominations for the 2024 Latin Grammy Awards were revealed this morning (Sept. 17). Karol G and Bad Bunny are the most-nominated artists this year. This also marks the debut of the Latine EDM and contemporary música mexicana albums categories.
For the second year in a row, the person with the most nominations is Mexican-American producer and songwriter Edgar Barrera. He received nine nominations this year. Behind him, Karol G and Bad Bunny are the most-nominated artists, with eight nominations each. They’re both up for Record of the Year. Karol G’s “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” and Bad Bunny’s “Monaco” face competition from songs like “Igual Que Un Ángel” by Kali Uchis and Peso Pluma, “Mil Veces” by Anitta, “Una Vida Pasada” by Camilo and Carín León, “Mambo 23” by Juan Luis Guerra y 4.40, and “Tenochtitlán” by Mon Laferte.
Karol G is also nominated for Album of the Year for her Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season) mixtape. Her competition in that category includes Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, Bolero by Ángela Aguilar, Boca Chueca, Vol. 1 by Carín León, and Residente’s Las Letras Ya No Importan. The Best New Artist category includes a few acts that Remezcla has covered this year, like Colombian singer-songwriter Ela Taubert, Mexico trio Latin Mafia, and all-women group Darumas. Spanish singer-songwriter Íñigo Quintero, who went to No. 1 on Spotify’s Top 50 Global chart last year with “Si No Estás,” is also nominated.
To be more inclusive to the new wave of música mexicana like corridos tumbados and sierreño, the Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album category was created this year. The first nominees include Natanael Cano’s Nata Montana, DannyLux’s Evoluxion, Michelle Maciel’s Trastornado, Peso Pluma’s Génesis, Grupo Frontera’s Jugando A Que No Pasa Nada, and Carín León’s latest LP. To recognize Latine EDM, the Best Latin Electronic Music Performance category was also introduced. Brazilian producer Alok is nominated with Vikina and Deorro’s “Bambole” and the Tiësto remix of Shakira and Bizarrap’s “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”
The 25th annual Latin Grammy Awards will take place on Thursday, Nov. 14. The ceremony will be broadcast live from Miami, FL, on Univision, Galavisión, and ViX.
