Iván Cornejo has come through with the soundtrack for your summer. Today (July 19), the Mexican-American crooner released his new album Mirada. Cornejo also dropped the melancholic music video for the song “Mirada.”

Cornejo is one of the OGs behind the música mexicana explosion. While his peers are succeeding with corridos tumbados, he has helped popularize the guitar-driven sierreño genre. In 2021, he scored his first hit with “Está Dañada,” the second música mexicana song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Cornejo’s fans call him a “sierreño sad boy” thanks to his catalog of emotional songs. After a few years away, he has returned with his third album, Mirada.

“I fell in love with that word [‘Mirada’] through the songwriting process for this album,” Cornejo said in a statement. “It felt soft and gentle. It’s a deep word, and I love how it looks visually. The title track references a gaze from your lover, the look you may perceive from someone falling out of love with you. A gaze can forever change your life.”

Like the Mirada album, the title track also signals a sad sierreño summer ahead. In the rock-infused “Mirada” song, Cornejo sings about being haunted by the gaze of a woman who broke his heart. The music video shows him working on a painting as his memories of their past relationship run through his head. Cornejo is a master of pulling at the heartstrings with his alternative sierreño songs.

Mirada also includes Cornejo’s previous hits, like “Baby Please” and “Aquí Te Espero.” Next month, he will kick off his Mirada Tour on Aug. 15 at the Hertz Arena in Estero, FL. Peso Pluma tapped Cornejo to feature on the song “Reloj” from his Éxodo album, which was released last month.
