After seven years since her last LP, Shakira’s highly-anticipated album Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran is finally out! On March 22, the Colombian superstar released her newest 17-track album, which includes features by Cardi B, Rauw Alejandro, and Grupo Frontera. The result? A demonstration of her musical expertise in delivering hit after hit across any given genre – throwback pop-rock days included.
Shakira is coming in hot with a new album that spotlights the vulnerability of a hopeless romantic. She gives us playful, flirty songs like the disco-pop electronic-tinged jams “Puntería” with Cardi B and the Rauw Alejandro-assisted “Cohete,” which features coquettish lyrics that describe being smitten with someone special. Another new release that captures a softer, romantic side of her album is “Nassau,” where the iconic singer experiments with Afrobeats for the first time.
However, she also shows her stripped vulnerability with sentimental tracks like the Bizarrap-produced “La Fuerta,” which exudes her feelings of loneliness and counters the EDM production’s clubbish ambiance. Another song reflecting the aftermath of falling out of love is the kiss-off norteño cumbia “(Entre Paréntesis)” with Grupo Frontera. The piano ballad “Última” also gives listeners a deeper insight into the singer’s raw feelings about broken love as she croons heartfelt lyrics like: “Se me perdió el amor a mitad de camino / ¿Cómo es que te cansaste de algo tan genuino?”
And that’s not all the icon gave us with her new album. Perhaps one of her most exciting new songs – especially for her loyal fans – is “Tiempo Sin Verte,” driven by guitar chords coated with a pop beat that takes an OG fan back to her pre-reggaeton days. Another instant hit that echoes the same sentiment is the pop-rock love anthem “Cómo Dónde y Cuándo” which reminds loyal fans of her old rockera days.
These new tracks are part of Shak’s 12th album in her musical trajectory that spans over three decades—and the first after her public split from ex-partner Gerard Piqué, which was announced in June 2022. She first teased her new LP in April 2022 when she released “Te Felicito” with Rauw Alejandro, in which she sarcastically thanks someone for being such a good actor. Curiously, at the time, the public didn’t know it was about Piqué.
After the news broke out, Shakira released a string of singles that expressed her inner thoughts in the artistic way she’s known for. She continued to spill her heart out and let her art speak for itself with her next single, a bachata-tinged “Monotonía” with Ozuna. In the Ozuna collaboration, many fans speculated that the man featured in the video represented Piqué due to a similar wardrobe in her “Me Enamoré” video released in 2017.
But it wasn’t until her viral hit “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Biza that she finally let it all out. Fans were pleasantly surprised when the Colombian singer-songwriter got candid with her wordplay and even included the Spanish former fútbol player’s new partner, Clara Chía, into the mix. The new album features a new Tiësto remix that gives a fresh club spin to the hit.
Later, she continued her kiss-off anthems with “TQG” with Karol G, which boasts of leveling up after a bad breakup. Moreover, the album’s following single showed her unconditional motherly love in “Acróstico” with her children Milan and Sasha.
Before the album fully dropped, listeners were also treated to a love song, “Copa Vacía,” with her compatriot Manuel Turizo. Then, Shakira finally released the ska-injected música mexicana earworm “El Jefe” with Fuerza Regida.
Moreover, with the new album release, she also unveiled her newest music video for “Puntería” with Cardi B, which features the two artists in a bubblegum-pink alternative universe.
