Was Lady Gaga’s comeback song and music video inspired by Elvis Crespo? Fans of the Puerto Rican icon think there are some similarities to his video and song, which is also called “Abracadabra.”
During the 2025 Grammy Awards telecast on Feb. 2, Lady Gaga released her new single “Abracadabra.” Both the song and music video have been described as a return to form to her daring Born This Way era. But eagle-eyed Latine fans later noticed that the gothic video was similar to one Crespo released six years ago.
In 2019, Crespo released a bewitching merengue banger called “Abracadabra.” In the music video, the flamboyant singer wears an all-red outfit. Though Lady Gaga wears multiple outfits in her video, there’s a specific look where she dons a red dress and hat, resulting in comparisons to Crespo’s look. In both songs, they both repeat “abracadabra” like they’re casting a love spell.
Whether or not Gaga was inspired by Crespo, what’s important is that people are rediscovering the “Suavemente” hit-maker’s campy song and video. People online are also having fun making comparisons between the two artists. With a crying emoji, one person wrote on X, “Someone said that Elvis Crespo walked so Lady Gaga could run.” With a laughing emoji, another person wrote, “I can’t get over Abracadabra. By Gaga? No, by Elvis Crespo.” Crespo is also enjoying the comparisons. On Instagram he wrote, “You like to see Lady Gaga and Elvis Crespo together?” As of press time, Lady Gaga hasn’t commented on the matter.

Crespo has a history of being compared to pop stars, including Rosalía, Charli xcx, and Billie Eilish in the past, so Lady Gaga is in good company. “Abracadabra” will be included on her upcoming album Mayhem, coming out on March 7. The LP will also include her previous single, “Disease.”
