Taylor Swift has worked with a Mexican cinematographer to bring her The Life of a Showgirl era to life. The pop superstar tapped Rodrigo Prieto to work on her new music video for “Opalite,” which was released today (Feb. 6).
Throughout his career, Prieto has received four Academy Award nominations. He was nominated for Best Cinematography for his work in Brokeback Mountain, Silence, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon. However, Swift has a long history of working with Prieto. She first tapped him as a cinematographer for 2020’s “The Man” music video. She also collaborated with him on the videos for “Cardigan,” “Willow,” and “Fortnight.”
Swift rekindled her professional relationship with Prieto for her The Life of a Showgirl era. She collaborated with him on the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” In a post on X, Swift gave him a big shout-out for being the cinematographer on her new video for “Opalite.” She wrote, “I got to work with one of my favorite people in the world, Rodrigo Prieto, again!” He responded on his Instagram stories, writing, “So grateful for this amazing mega fun project, Taylor Swift!!!”
The music video for “Opalite” was directed and written by Swift. Prieto served as the video’s cinematographer and shot it on film. “Opalite” includes cameo appearances from Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Domhnall Gleeson, Lewis Capaldi, Graham Norton, and Cillian Murphy, who all previously appeared on Swift’s episode of The Graham Norton Show.
The “Opalite” music video premiered today on Spotify Premium and Apple Music. YouTube might have been left in the dust for now due to views on that platform no longer counting toward the U.S. Billboard charts. Last year, “Opalite” drew comparisons to Luis Miguel’s “1+1=2 Enamorados.”
