Shakira has special plans in store for the upcoming 2024 Copa América. Today (May 14), the Colombian pop icon revealed that one of her songs will be used as an official anthem for coverage of the global event.

The 2024 Copa América will kick off next month on June 20. The competition includes the 10 national teams from the CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation), including Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The national teams from Mexico and the U.S. also qualified for the competition through the CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football). Sixteen teams will battle it out on the soccer field for the Copa América title. Argentina won the last Copa América in 2021.

Shakira made a surprise appearance at TelevisaUnivision’s 2024 Upfront event in New York City, NY, this afternoon. She revealed that her recent hit “Puntería” featuring Cardi B will be used as part of the celebrations for the 2024 Copa América. TelevisaUnivision will play Shakira’s song during its coverage of the soccer tournament. The last match between the final two teams will take place at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, FL, on July 14.

Using “Puntería” as a theme song for the 2024 Copa América makes all the sense in the world with Shakira and Cardi B singing about having good aim. Instead of cupid aiming for their hearts with arrows, their disco-pop banger will be motivational for the soccer teams to score their goals.

“Puntería” comes from Shakira’s latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, which came out in March. That LP also includes her hits like “BZRP Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap, “Te Felicito” with Rauw Alejandro, and “TQG” with Karol G. Shakira also dabbled in música mexicana through collaborations with Grupo Frontera and Fuerza Regida.
