For a band named Girl in a Coma, they're sure keeping pretty active. As one of San Antonio's musical success stories, Latin rocker trio (sisters Nina and Phanie Diaz, along with friend Jenn Alva) has got their fans and followers itching for their upcoming series of EPs in vinyl and digital release. Titled Adventures in Coverland, the collection of covers range from David Bowie to Latin music icon Selena, from Joy Division to Ritchie Valens.

The series stands as the girls' tribute to the music that inspired their own sound, such as The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." In the spirit of their creative vibe, GIAC's 7'' EP sleeves will each be a piece of a game board, put together they build something greater, just like the music within them and their own sound. Along with the release the girls will be performing around the states with bands such as Xiu Xiu, The Wedding Present and Sia, fresh off their SXSW shows, where they performed with The Runaways' Cherrie Curie in front of fans as well as the cast of the movie of the 70s band, such as Kristen Stewart.

Cafe Tacuba Singer Has a New Band

The ever chameleonic Rubén Albarrán, from Café Tacuba, has decided to shake up more than his stage name this time. The singer, formerly known as Anónimo et al, introduced his new project at the Jardín Borda, as part of the Festival Tamoanchán de Morelos. As expected, the band doesn't have a permanent name, but for now, the funky Los ZopiRockets will do. Apart from Tacuba's ¡Pinche Juan!, aka Cosme, other band members include mad violinist and Cafeta collaborator Alejandro Flores, as well as Chilean artists Juan Pablo and Rodrigo “El Chino”.

Albarrán claims that his latest work was inspired by the sound of folkloric tunes and the memory of endlessly listening to his mother's albums. He claims that although he had composed such covers before, this was something he felt he had to do. That attitude reminds us of Café Tacuba, an honest and refreshing band when it comes to their music.

I know that Café Tacuba fans must be feeling somewhat nervous, seeing Albarrán part aside and do his own thing, but remember that it's for a greater good, in the name of pretty interesting music. Besides, who knows? Maybe Los ZopiRockets will become the next Café Tacuba.

The days when I felt like an odd ball for listening to salsa in Williamsburg are over, it seems hipsters stop at nothing to set trends and salsa is their latest victim. West Brooklyn's latest music child is the Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra. The young orchestra hit the hipster world hard last week by posting their latest cover of the all-too-cool Animal Collective's "My Girls", on YouTube, and its already got the hipsters around Brooklyn thinking "could there be more to salsa than weird horny immigrants and slutty dancing?' Other bands they've covered are CSS, Camera Obscura and TV on the Radio.

Despite my witty remarks, I am glad someone has finally built a bridge between the young up-and coming music community and NY's musical trajectory. After all, despite its popularity and pride through Latin America, salsa was born in New York City! It was about time Americans can attempt to dance salsa while singing along.

WSO is reaching out to some of our Latin regulars such band members from Navegante and Spanglish fly, having them as guests to play with them.

Well, What do you think? Any cover suggestions? who knows you might get your request...

Watch the videos after the jump.

Puerto Rican hip hop artist Yeyo, from the group The Dey, recently released his solo album Life of a Warrior. This being hip hop, he simultaneously released a FREE mixtape to go with it.

Incorporating salsa and Latin rhythms in tracks such as a cover of the legendary Hector Lavoe's single "Triste y vacia" the Miami-based Yeyo plays with the sounds of his native Puerto Rico and contemporary hip hop. It's good to hear some cultural relevance and musicality to the usually bland-sounding genre of Latin hip hop. The mixtape includes old songs from The Dey, plus collaborations with Locos Por Juana and more.

Rocola Bacalao, the self-proclaimed "La banda más chimba del mundo" -- or the " The lamest band in the world" -- are anything but. Recreating folkloric and popular Ecuadorian and Latin American rhythms and melodies, yet taking inspiration from traditional jazz and perhaps some ska, Rocola Bacalao's music is catchy yet certainly well considered and composed: you can hear the layers of musical reference, not to mention culture and styles.
