World of Wonder
The cast for season 17 of RuPaul’s Drag Race has been revealed. Among the new group of drag queens, three Latinas will compete for the title of “American’s Next Drag Superstar.”
Nymphia Wind, the winner of season 16, announced the cast for next season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The theme for season 17 is “Wetter is Better,” so the fourteen new drag queens showed off their best aquatic looks. And the three Latinas competing for the crown include Arrietty, Jewels Sparkles, and Lucky Starzzz.
The last Latina queen to win the main series was Violet Chachki, who is of Ecuadorian descent, on season seven in 2015.
Arrietty hails from Seattle, WA. The self-proclaimed “futuristic elf” queen is of Mexican descent. Arrietty, who is a fan of anime, got her drag name from the Hayao Miyazaki film The Secret World of Arrietty. She is the drag daughter of Irene Dubois, who competed on season 15. “As a Latina, the first POC [competitor] from Seattle, I cannot wait to showcase myself and hold the flag for the [trills tongue] community,” Arrietty said in her Instagram stories.

Jewels Sparkles represents the drag scene in Tampa, FL. She is of Puerto Rican and Cuban descent. In her “Meet the Queens” video, Jewels Sparkles revealed that she discovered RuPaul’s Drag Race while visiting her family in Puerto Rico. “I’m America’s Next Drag Superstar because we haven’t had a Latina winner in a very long time,” she said. “There hasn’t been a Puerto Rican winner of Drag Race. It would be so major to represent Puerto Rico and be the Latina queen that I know Puerto Ricans deserve.”
Lucky Starzzz was born in Havana, Cuba and now resides in Miami, FL. With her artsy drag style, the Cuban-American queen has been described as an “expressive, colorful, living cartoon.” In her “Meet the Queens” video, Lucky Starzzz also showed off her fluency in speaking Spanish. “I’m Cuban and I’m on RuPaul’s Drag Race and yes, I’m going to win the crown,” she said.

Their season 17 competitors include Acacia Forgot, Crystal Envy, Hormona Lisa, Joella, Kori King, Lana Ja’Rae, Lexi Love, Lydia B Kollins, Onya Nurve, Sam Star, and Suzie Toot. Season 17 will premiere on Friday, January 3, 2025 on MTV at 8:00 p.m. EST.
