We seem to be on the cusp of a new trend: legacy jukebox musicals. On October 1, El Alma al Aire, a new musical based on the work of Alejandro Sanz, premiered in Madrid. The production features some of his biggest hits, including “Corazón Partío,” “Amiga Mía,” and “No Es Lo Mismo,” weaving them into an original story with a dazzling, Broadway-like presentation. This isn’t a new idea. Another Spanish act, Mecano, saw its hits turned into the highly successful musical Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar. Likewise, a collection of ’80s baladas en español forms the basis of the Mexican smash Mentiras: El Musical, which has spawned a drag show and a movie starring Belinda and Luis Gerardo Méndez. Similar productions have also drawn on the work of Selena, Juan Gabriel, and Soda Stereo, to name a few. That got us dreaming about stage productions built around an iconic artist’s catalog, with an original story to drive each jukebox musical. Here are six ideas we’d love to see come to life, in no particular order. Swipe and let us know what you think!
